Aaron

Aaron is a responsive, accessibility-ready theme. Features include Call to Action and front page Highlights that will grab your visitors attention and help you feature different parts of your website. The theme has two optional menus (including a social menu) and three widget areas that will hold any number of widgets.

Want to run Aaron on a company website rather than a blog? No problem, just hide the meta, the sidebars, and turn off your comments.

I recommend that you install the Jetpack plugin to make full use of supported features like logos, featured content, contact forms and social sharing. To create a portfolio, install Jetpack and create your projects, all the templates are already shipped with the theme. Aaron also works well with Woocommerce and bbPress.

Aaron has evolved from the user comments, requests and questions that has been sent in. Thank you for contributing and helping me make a better theme.

You can download Aaron from WordPress.org.

Menus

This theme has two optional menu locations, the Primary menu and the Social menu.
An image describing how a submenu drops down from the Primary menu
The Primary menu is fixed at the top of the website and shows two menu levels. This menu will collapse on smaller screens, and can then be opened and closed by a menu button. It can also be closed with the Esc key.
A one line menu is recommended, or the menu will overlap your content. Use submenus instead.

The Social menu is at the bottom of the page and shows logos of the social networks of your choice. It does not display any text, but has additional information for screen readers.
The icon will be added automatically, all you need to do is add a link to your menu.

Create a new menu, then click on Custom links and add your URL. The Link Text that you provide is used as screen reader text.

Advanced
By default, the primary meny also shows the site title and a search form. The search form is not visible on screens smaller than 800 pixels.
You can edit these features under the Advanced settings tab in the Customizer.

Widget areas

The theme now has two different sidebars: one for the front page and blog index, and one for other pages.
To show either sidebar, all you need to do is place your widgets inside them.
To hide either sidebar, remove the widgets. The content of the page will expand to full width when the sidebar is hidden.

Both the sidebars and the footer widget area can hold any number of widgets. The footer widget area is shown on all pages.
There is also one additional widget area in the footer below the social menu, where you can place a text widget and add your copyright text.

Front page

The standard front page has the following features:
Site title: You will find an option to hide or change the color of your site title in the customizer.
Call to action: The Call to Action is a great way to get your visitors attention. In the customizer you can:

  • Add your own text
  • Add a link
  • Change colors
  • Hide the button

Highlights: This is a flexible way for you to feature different sections of your website. You can add upp to nine highlights.
In the customizer you can:

  • Add your own text
  • Add a link
  • Add an icon or upload an image
  • Change colors
  • Hide the individual highlights or all of them

Tagline: You will find an option to hide your tagline in the customizer.
Header Background: You can change the background image or background color in the customizer.

Custom front page

To use a custom page template for the front page, create a new page and select the template under Page Attributes.

Then set your new page as your static front page in the customizer or under Settings > Reading.

Templates

The Landing page template only shows your header, it does not display your footer, your featured content, post content or page content. Your header image will display as a fullscreen image.
The Header & Footer page template only shows your header and footer, it does not display your featured content, post content or page content. It will display the footer widget area, but not the sidebar.
The Static and Featured page template will display the content of the selected page together with your featured content. You also need to active the Jetpack module for Featured Content.
The Grid page template shows your posts in a responsive masonry grid. It does not display the sidebar.
The No sidebar page template shows your page content, but it does not display the sidebar.

Page sections
Page sections are a great way to display your shortcodes, testimonials, pricing tables, contact information and similar.
The two page sections can display up to 3 pages each. Pages in the top section are displayed above the blog content, and pages in the bottom section are displayed below.
You can also show your page sections without your blog content by setting a static front page, using the Sections page template.

Advanced settings

Under the Advanced settings tab in the customizer you will find the following options:

  • Show the excerpt instead of the full content on the front page, blog listing and archives Note: Search results show excerpts by default.
  • Hide the meta information. -This will hide the category and tags.
  • Hide the author and post date information.
  • Show the breadcrumb navigation. -Breadcrumbs are shown below the post title.
  • Hide the search form in the header menu.
  • Show the search form in the header menu on all screen sizes.
  • Hide the Site title in the header menu.
  • Unstick the fixed header menu.
  • Move the meta below the post content. By default, this is shown to the right of the post content.

Header settings for individual posts and pages
To display the header together with an individual post or page, go to Edit mode and activate the Header settings that are located below your post content.
Your post view will inherit the settings from the front page.
Options:

  • Show the header.
  • Use the featured image as header image. This requires the header to be active, and a featured image to be set. The image will inherit the background position from the default header.
  • Hide the Call to Action button.
  • Hide the Highlights.
  • Hide the site Tag line (Description).
  • Replace the site title in the header with your post or page title.

Accessibility

Note: In version 2.0, the accessibility settings were moved from the Advanced Settings to it’s own setting in the customizer. Changing the colors of the theme can affect accessibility.

  • Skip link: the theme has one skip link at the very top that lets you skip past the main menu.
If Highligts are used, you skip to the first Highlight, otherwise you skip to the main content.
  • In the customizer you can add personalized screen reader texts for your sidebar and footer.
  • There is also an option to change text displayed as UPPERCASE to Capitalized.
  • Known issues:
    • Some widgets that uses forms (category dropdown) are missing form labels. This is a known issue with WordPress.
    • Menus have a visible focus and can be tabbed through, but you can not navigate them using the arrow keys.

Fonts

Aaron uses Open Sans for body, and defaults to Montserrat for headings, menus and footer texts. You will find an option to change Montserrat to a different font in the customizer.

Plugins

Aaron has been tested with and style has been added for the following plugins:

  • Woocommerce
  • bbPress
  • Jetpack
Note: Not all of Jetpacks modules are accessibe, and some uses iframes. I have increased the contrast of some of the modules.

Recommended modules:

  • Featured content
-Once Jetpack has been activated, you can select up to six posts or pages as a front page feature. Chose a tag and add it to your posts to separate them from the rest.
You can also choose a headline for your featured section. Featured images are optional and the recommended image size is 360×300 pixels.
An image describing three featured posts on the front page, two with featured images and one that only displays the post title.
  • Custom Content Type: Portfolio
Aaron also supports Jetpack Portfolios. Read more about how to setup your Portfolio on Jetpacks support site.An image describing two portfolio items.
  • Custom Content Type: Testimonials
    Aaron also supports Jetpack Testimonials.
Tip: I recommend creating a page and adding this shortcode, and then including the page as a front page section.

  • Sharing
-If you activate Jetpack sharing, your buttons will be displayed below the meta information, to the right of your post content.

  1. Hello,
thank you for this lovely theme, i’m really enjoying exploring all its possibilities.

I have two difficulties though, perhaps you can help.

    1. I have followed all the instructions to choose a page for my posts, but it just keeps showing as the Home page.

    2. The submenu shows up fine on the computer, but when I look for it on the phone, it doesn’t show up.

can you make sense of these two things please,
    with many thanks
    Lilith

    1. Hi!
If you want the list of posts -the blog, to look different than the default front page then you need to use a page template. There are no such templates in the theme.
-The submenus are hidden on purpose due to the limited space.

  2. Thank you for this great theme with very nice configuration options!

I made one small change for a site i work on and i think this could be maybe included in the next update for aaron?:
i made the link on the highlight pictures on the frontpage clickable, because i understood that users specially on mobile phones often try to click on the picture instead of the text below.
therefor i did this very simple and easy modification:
i moved in highlights.php the block with the link above the block with the picture, thats all.
but i see that users navigate now much easyer on the frontpage.

    have a great time,
    Beat

  3. Aloha Carolina,

Thank you so much for the quick reply!

    1. Regarding my original question about getting rid of the post display on the first page, I think there may have been a miscommunication. I tried to do what you suggested, but I didn’t see any visible differences. Perhaps if you visit our website (alohabusinesssolutions.com), our question will be more clear. On our website, on the home page, at the bottom, it says ”Nothing Found” and provides a search bar. We don’t want this to be on the home page. Is there a way to no longer have that?

    2. After further investigation, I realized that we never finished connecting JetPack with a wordpress.com account. Isn’t there a fee to have an account with them?

    Thanks,
    Megan & Noelle

  4. I am a newbee to word press and this theme and hoping for some kind help:) How do I, and can I change the photo on the front page and how do I add my logo to the front page? Thank you in advance.

  5. Aloha Carolina,

We’re messaging from Hawaii! We love your theme Aaron and are really happy to be using it for our website, alohabusinesssolutions.com. We would love if you could help us with a few questions to be able to better personalize our site!

    1. Like Dave mentioned above, we are wondering if there is a way to get rid of the post display on the home/front page? We like to have the header and footer, we only want to get rid of the post (because our business has no need for posts on our website).

    2. We would like to add a logo to our front page. This is what is mentioned above about site logo:

(Site logo -Once Jetpack has been activated, you can add a logo above your Site title on the frontpage. You will find this setting in the customizer.)

We have activated Jetpack. And we went under Appearance- Customize, but can not find any options listed for adding a logo above our site title on the frontpage. Can you please email how to fix this?

    3. When we add the logo, we want to use a .PNG file with a transparent background, so that through the openings in the logo, our website background will show through. Do you foresee us running into any issues? Are there certain instructions that you suggest when posting it to the website?

    Mahalo & Thank You,
    Megan & Noelle

    1. Hi!
      1) Please try the landingpage template and set it as your static front page.

2 & 3) Jetpack changes the first setting, at the very top of the customizer, to ”Site Title, Tagline and Logo”. There should be an image upload area below the input box for the tagline.
      Using png’s shouldn’t be a problem.

    2. Or actually the landing page doesn’t show the footer. You can manually edit landingpage.php
      and add get_footer(); right below get_header();

Remember to create a child theme or you will loose any changes when the theme is updated.

  6. I’ve been trying to customize my site using Aaron, but the frontpage keeps displaying the setup highlights as well as the ones I enter. Also, applying the front page template to a new page to create a custom landing page just gives me a blank page.

    1. Hi! Yes unfortunately there was a bug with the highlights in version 1.9. A new version has been submitted but there is a bit if a que to get it approved. But only logged in users will see this bug.

That is exactly what the landing page template does: it only shows the header and not your page content.

What kind of template do you need?

  7. Hello Carolina,
I just performed the update and I am having a problem with the highlights. The 3 pre-programmed highlights called: ”Easy Set Up”, ”Accessible & Responsive” and ”Jetpack Compatible” are fixed to my home page. When I go into the customizer all of the Highlights are empty. If I add my custom highlights they appear below the fixed ones. How can I repair this? Currently I have the highlights hidden but I would really like to use them.

Also- Is it possible to completely remove the sidebar space from all of the pages and posts on my site? I do not need a sidebar at all and would love for my page/post content to occupy 100% of the page/post width. Currently there is about 1/3 of the right of each page that is blank and I am unable to center any content completely.

Finally- I am trying to change the background of the call to action box so that it turns white when I hover over it. About 50% opacity would be perfect. I just need my text to stand out more clearly.

    Thank you for your help!
    Vanessa

    1. Hi!
Yes a bug has been reported about the highlights in version 1.9. Have you tried logging out and viewing the page? The default highlights should only be showing when you are logged in. So it should not affect your visitors.

I will need some time to test your other suggestions and post an update.

  8. Hello:

Firstly, thank you for this great theme. It gives the professional look I have been wanting. Secondly, although my site looks good in Chrome, it is broken in IE 11. I had the jetpack installed, but then I deactivated it to see if that was the problem. It didn’t change anything.
Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi! And thank you for notifying me. The theme has been tested with IE11 (but not tested on mac), can you tell me or even better show me what exactly is broken? 🙂

      1. Hello:

I fixed it by forcing IE11 into Edge mode by adding the following code into my .htaccess file in the root directory of my site.
        BrowserMatch MSIE ie
        Header set X-UA-Compatible ”IE=Edge,chrome=1” env=ie

        Thanks!

  9. I love this theme! Is there a way to have posts show up only on pages and not on the front page. I have a page for video and one for blog post and would like to keep the front page clear. Any thoughts?

    Thanks again

    1. Hi!
Well how much of the front page do you want to show? The header and footer? or just the header?

  10. Hello Carolina,
I am so happy with Aaron. It is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! I have 2 questions concerning the mobile site that was activated with jetpack.

    1. The menu bar and search area at the top of the mobile site are in a color I do not want: #21759B. This is also true for the text at the very bottom of the screen (view full site, powered by wordpress) How do I change this color on the mobile site?

    2. In my ABOUT page I have loaded some images that link to other pages. On the full site these images are in a very nice grid. When they appear in the mobile site they are not justified to each other. Every 3rd one is aligned to the left while the rest are aligned in the center. Do you know how to adjust for this?

Finally I am wondering if it is possible to use the Upcoming events widget that comes with jetpack? It is supposed to link to an iCalendar. The description is in the jetpack settings but does not appear in the widget options in the customizer.

    Thank you!
    Vanessa

    1. Hi and thank you :).
Are you perhaps using Jetpacks mobile theme? That is part of Jetpack and I don’t know how to change that I’m afraid.

I have not tested the theme with the Upcoming events widget. I’ll see what I can find and get back to you here.

      1. Hello,
I finally disabled the Jetpack mobile theme and the site looks great. I did not realize that Aaron was already set up for a mobile version. Thank you!

  11. I have purchased the Aaron Theme on Word Press and it is lovely!
Thank you for your hard work.
Can you tell me please, can I add an image on each page? Also, can I make the home page buttons transparent and not use the icons? I will need one more category on the home page, can there be four?
Thank you so much for the quick response!

    1. Hi! I would need some time to find and test a solution for you.
By images on every page do you mean the full screen header? The same header on all the pages?

(Aaron is 100% free on wordpress.org, so if someone asked you to pay for it, I hope you can get a refund)

  12. Hello Carolina,
I would also like to know if it is possible to change the font color of the call to action box. I have a dark image loaded on my front page and would love to have the font be white in the call to action box.
    Thank you!

    1. Hi!
Right now, you need to edit the style.css file to change the color. Find this section on lines 1189 and below:
      #action a{
      text-decoration:none;
      color:#000000;
      padding-bottom:4px;
      }

  13. Hi Carolina,

Love the theme! I have two questions.

    1. Is there a way to change the color of the call to action text? The black text doesn’t show up very good on darker images.

    2. Is there a way to put a copyright notice at the bottom under the social media buttons?

    1. Hi!
      1) You need to edit the style.css file to change the color. Find this section on lines 1189 and below:
      #action a{
      text-decoration:none;
      color:#000000;
      padding-bottom:4px;
      }

      2) To add a copyright text in the footer you also need to edit footer.php. I suggest you add your text inside this div on line 39 and below: < div class="site-info" >

  14. Hi Carolina,

Thank you for your awesome theme, I really like it! I have one question concerning the .entry-footer. It seems to me that the entry footer i placed right to a post by default?

However, I would like to have it in the bottom of a post. Can you help out?

    Tx in advance!
    Till

    1. Hi, and thank you 🙂
Yes the footer is to the right by default. I will need some time to test it. but will get back to you as soon as I have a solution!

      1. Hi Carolina

        That sound good 🙂
As an alternative: Is it possible to delete the entry header as a such? For my site, it only shows the caegory, and i also have that in a widget in the sidebar…

        Tx 🙂
        Till

        1. Have you tried the option ” Check this box to hide the meta information. ” under Advanced settings in the customizer?
It will hide the footer, but it will not expand the content of the post all the way to the right.

          1. Hi Carolina,

that worked out, thank you. It´s a pity that it doesn´t expand the content all the way to the right, though.

Do you know a way to do so? 🙂

            Cheers,
            Till

  15. Hi! Thanks for a nice-looking theme. Wanting to use it for a small ”corporate” website instead of a blog-site. WP Newbie. Is there a way to remove the highlights, or to add an option to put a custom logo or picture in there, instead of the choice of icons? Also, can I remove the ”leave a reply” on the bottom of a page that´s already created?

    1. Hi and thank you!
You can hide the highlights from the Customize menu, then choose Frontpage Highlights, and check the first option called Hide the highlights. To add a logo to the header, you need a plugin., for example Jetpack ( Though it is bloated if you are only using the logo).
Go to your page and choose Edit. Now at the top right you should see a link or a tab of a sort called ”Screen options”. Open the tab
and check the box named ”Discussion”. You should now see a new field below the page, where you can choose to allow comments or not.

  16. Hi Carolina! Thank you for your response. I’ve got my second question–the menu problem–fixed.

For the posts and pages, I would like to have just the clickable site title above the post, without the giant header image.

That leads me to another question. What is the reason for all of the space on the right side of the post? I don’t mean the widget area right of the box, but the empty space to the right of the post body inside the box. I’ve turned on sharing buttons, but I don’t want the author info. It just looks empty and I’m wondering what I can do about it. Could I fill it with more widget-type info? Or could I just center the whole post body and move the sharing buttons somewhere?

    Thanks again!

    1. Hi!
The right hand space is for the author info, and you are right I suppose it could adjust itself when it’s empty. I would need some time to test it though. It is also there to keep the post at a comfortable column width for reading.

For the header, open header.php and find line 84 that ends with }, then copy and paste this code behind it, its a quick fix.

  17. Hi. My site title is clickable on the front page, but go into a post and there is no title at all. Any ideas? Unless I add a main menu, there’s no way for visitors to get back home.

There’s an issue with the main menu as well. There’s no way to remove the first link in the menu, which is my site title. I’d like to change that to the word ”Home.” I’m off to go find out where it is in the files.

    1. Hi! Those are design choices, but I’m sure we can make it work the way you want. Do you want the site title above the posts, or the entire header including header image?
If you make changes, make sure you create a child theme so that you don’t loose them on update.
Find line 92 in functions.php, and change get_bloginfo(‘name’) to Home.

    2. …There is an option to remove the link in the Customizer under Advanced settings: ”Check this box to hide the clickable site title in the header menu. ”

  18. Hi, I just started using the Aaron theme, and I really like it but so far I cannot seem to get the widgets sidebar to appear. Any advice for a newcomer?

    1. Hi!
The sidebar is hidden on pages and the frontpage, but there is an option in the customizer to make it visible.

  19. I love this theme, but I can’t get it to run with Jetpack. I get these error messages:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 41943040 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 30720 bytes) in /data/22/2/60/43/2060858/user/2258982/htdocs/site/wp-admin/includes/deprecated.php on line 527

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 41943040 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7680 bytes) in /data/22/2/60/43/2060858/user/2258982/htdocs/site/wp-admin/includes/list-table.php on line 66

Sorry I only know English (and French) or I might find an solution here! Otherwise, a very nice theme.
